Caged Bird Syndrome

Swinging her long leg over the edge of the bed, she used her dainty foot to fish for her bra located somewhere on the chilled, wooden floor.

Unsuccessful at this attempt, and wearily rolling to her side, she repositions herself for another go as she peers over the bed.

In doing this, her movements on the mattress, seemly stirring the other occupant lying on the other side of the bed.

Briefly glancing backward over her shoulder to ensure he was still asleep she then returned to her visual hunt for the mint green, laced garment.

“What are you doing?” his deep, raspy voice, still riddled with sleep began to interrogate.

“Umm, nothing!” was her short response, slightly startled. “I was just looking for my bra. It‘s cold in here, my nipples are so hard they‘re beginning to hurt.” She said kindly, not wanting to unleash her true intentions of trying to jet while he was still asleep.

“Well then…get in here!” He said, pawing at the small of her back, grasping the soft skin on her waist, and luring her inward towards his warmth.

Shuddering, she lowered her eyes from the window to the floor, and then to the sheets in a sulking manner. Hesitantly rolling over to her other side, and burying her face into his chest so he would not recognize the relenting expression that now spread through her eyes and across the rest of her face.

The truth was that she was not at ease just lying there in a bed with him. Him, seemingly so content and satisfied, while she felt like she was draped in a scratchy wool robe; uncomfortable. The part that perplexed her most was that this was someone she used to share a bed with every night. Why was it so difficult to be comfortable now?

She forced her nerves to quiet and her skin to lie still. She tried focusing on her breathing, mentally shoving herself to believe that she was safe in his arms. However, she wasn’t buying it, not even for a moment. Unfortunate for her, if she existed in the manner that she usually left men after a lustful romp, she knew it would only make waves. She wasn’t sure where her feelings lie. The only thing she could recognize at this point was the all too familiar feeling of walls closing in on her. She had always referred to it as, caged bird syndrome, but nevertheless, she knew it all too well. –
